Crazy, crazy

Hey!

Sorry it's been almost a month since I last posted. This semester is really busy, and it's hard to handle everything. Last semester it was just hard to catch up to the level they started on in the music classes, and this semester my schedule is very difficult. The only really new class I have this semseter is English 150. I thought it would be my least favorite class, especially because we have to write so much and I haven't had to seriously write a good english paper since Pre-AP english sophomore year, but I have found I for some reason really enjoy that class. It's on Mon/Wed from 5:10-6:25, which is kind of a drag, but I have been blessed to end up with a really good teacher. I recently got my first paper back and I got a 110!! We got 10 extra points if we went to the writing center to have our paper looked over and helped. The lowest grade was a 60, so I was pretty excited about that. Ok, more like bouncing off the walls.

Last week, Jenna (my current roommate) and I began apartment hunting for next year. They had a housing fair the week before, which didn't really help us at all. It was kind of overwhelming because we didn't know what we were looking for, but we got a catalogue of all the apartments that are BYU approved, so that helped. I finally just made a list of requirements (washer/dryer in unit, dishwasher, disposal, microwave, parking, and 3-4 people in the apartment). We decided to have Grandma and Grandpa Braithwaite take us on thursday to look at some apartments (they are so awesome!), but it wasn't at all what I had expected. the only thing close to apartment shopping that I have done is going with some coworkers last summer to look at an apartment for one of them. They had this nice office with people waiting to show you around and let you know what options were available, etc, so I just assumed it would be the same here: WRONG. We had a list of some apartments we were interested in, and when we got to the first one, we were a little lost. We couldn't find an office anywhere, so we found some "For Rent" signs and decided to call some numbers. The first one I called, no one answered, so we tried one that we thought actually currently lived in the apartment. They were home so we went and looked around that one (even though they were trying to rent it for Spring/summer semesters, we just wanted to see what they looked like). The next couple of apartments we weren't so lucky. We couldn't really get a hold of anyone who could show us the apartments. As we had been driving to one, we saw a few nice looking apartments, so we decided to go back and look at those. We once again tried a posted number, but to no avail. Then I got the crazy idea of asking this random girl who was walking towards the apartments if she would show us hers. She of course did and we liked that one. We got in to the other two the same way. Jenna was too afraid to ask, so I did all the asking. She said, "I'm sure glad you're my roommate, because I would not be brave enough to ask random people" to which I responded, "well, my dad always told me that you only get in life what you're brave enough to ask for!" lol. Anyways, so we found a couple we were interested in and I went home and e-mailed one of them, asking if they had a contract available for fall/winter. They e-mailed back and said they only do year-round contracts. this happened a second and third time as well. I got pretty discouraged, because I had to start back at square one. Making a list from the internet. There are HUNDREDS of apartments. Anyways, mom found a website on BYU that has a list of vacancies, so from that list I narrowed it down to 7, and we'll try again this week. But this time I'm going to call ahead of time. Wow, that was a long story. Well, so began my housing-hunting quest, and so it continues...

So, here is my tiny amount of advice for your apartment search:

1. Don't live in King Henry. It is party central and too far from campus.

2. Ask around. Call Jenna and Shanna and ask their advice. They have done it all recently and may have some good info for you.

Good luck!

Wow! thats really crazy. I'm moving into grandma's basement in May. I'm pretty excited but a little nervous to be living on my own. It sounds like I got pretty lucky to not have to go apartment hunting. I hope you find one
